As a long standing customer (a few times a year since 2005) there is a nostalgia for me about The Grand in Big Timber. That feeling started to fade over the last 4 years. I have had quite a few meals (steak & fish) over the past few visits that have been mediocre at best. On July 10, 2014 I ordered the flat iron steak medium rare and it was very disappointing. First round came back well done and both my server and chef Amy didn't believe me. The answer was that her touching of the steak indicated it was medium rare. Amy should get back in touch with her ingredients because this is the second most tender cut of meat on a cow and not going to "feel" like a ny strip would. They can feel different from animal to animal. Secondly please don't leave a steak on a cast iron skillet. While rustic looking it continues to cook the steak well past the way anyone will order their meal. The menu while nostalgic, hasn't changed in almost a decade. I'm certain there are local favorites like the Montana rack of lamb that absolutely should never come off the menu and I highly recommend. Exec Chef Amy should take a page from the foodie cities and have 4 seasonal menus with fresh ingredients, LESS butter, more natural (olive) oils. More salad options with fruits and hearty vegetables like roasted beets, fingerling carrots, heirloom tomatoes, kale ect. The main point is be creative while healthy. It will return The Grand's Restaurant and Bar to it's glory days. More families will come out from their homes and be excited to grab a healthy seasonally changing meal.

This is one of those places that you think twice before submitting a review, because you don't want anyone else to find out how awesome it is! We stayed a night in the hotel as we traveled from Washington to Minnesota. I wasn't sure what to expect, but came away extremely pleased. The hotel/B&B is in great shape and certainly, for such a historic place, it offers most modern comforts. And, the staff at the hotel is amazingly pleasant. Don't even consider anywhere else of staying the night in or near Big Timber. You can't beat this place. Also, if you get the chance, grab dinner at their restaurant. Food was amazing. Expertly prepared. Served beautifully. Wine list wasn't deep, but broad enough to offer many good choices. We enjoyed this place so much that we are thinking of making a destination trip just to stay at the Grand and enjoy the local surroundings.

Just getting around to this review but wanted to make sure to say how impressed we were by the The Grand. We went for an after Christmas ski trip in mid January. We got stuck in a snowstorm and arrived about 10 minutes before the main dining room was supposed to close. Chef Amy was insistent on letting us stay for dinner as we had called ahead and were so excited. Not only was dinner amazing, the service was incredible! Such a special place that has been lovingly restored. The only thing I was hoping for was for the rooms to be a bit more with the old fashioned styling of the rest of the hotel. Otherwise, amazing!

My family and I were in Montana for vacation and I asked a local where to eat. He told us to go to the Grand Hotel. We arrived with a party of 12 at lunch time and we were seated quickly by some of the nicest people you will ever meet. We had multiple children who were well behaved, but requested every possible condiment imaginable. The staff kept up with our requests and were always upbeat with a smile on their faces. I ordered a burger, I'm an not sure if it was called to rodeo burger or maybe it was the bull rider burger, but it was perfect. Meat was very flavorful and juicy and it was cooked exactly the way a burger should be. My sister-in-law ordered the pulled pork sandwich, I think it was called the "amazing pork sandwich" or something close to that. I tried a piece of her sandwich and it was truly the best pork sandwich that I had ever had. We were truly amazed at the quality of food we were getting for the price. Simply put, it was the best food we ate while in Montana. This is the place to go. My advice if you are not in the area then drive to the grand, if you are in the area go. If you are planning a trip then make this a part of it. You will truly be pleased with everything. The Grand did and amazing job and I thank the local man who told me about it. I look forward to coming back from Texas to visit again.

We ate here twice over the course of our honeymoon in Montana. Great experiences both times. The first night we ate at their more formal dining room. The setting was great. The dining room is really well designed and you feel like you've been transported to an earlier time. I had the lamb and my wife had a shrimp and pasta dish. Both were excellent. The lamb was cooked perfectly and came out tender and full of flavor. The cocktails there were also quite good. I had a couple old-fashioneds that were delicious. Another night we came back from a day of hiking and ate at the less formal bar/restaurant side of the hotel. This was exactly what we needed after a long day of activity. Very comfortable, relaxed atmosphere. It was great to have this option available as we were not in a condition to be eating at the fine dining room on that night. Good burgers and fries and several beers on tap to choose from. I highly recommend both dining experiences at the Grand Hotel.

An excellent overall experience and I cannot wait for my next visit. A very cozy bed and breakfast, the Grand also has a great kitchen with a surprisingly ample wine list, considering its location in Montana. The room I stayed in did not have the most comfortable of beds (a little too springy), but it really had the feel of staying at a friend's house while visiting in town. The communal bathroom facilities were nice enough, and although I thought I might have trouble in the morning with finding an available shower/bath, this fear prove unfounded. At the time (summer 08), I believe I spent around $50 a night for a double bed, which, considering it included breakfast, was a steal. In my opinion, the real draw of the Grand is its restaurant. The hearty breakfast each morning was more than satisfying, and each dinner there I thoroughly enjoyed. In all honesty, I was very impressed that a hotel/restaurant in a relatively remote place such as Big Timber could have such refinement. As previously mentioned, the wine list is surprisingly sophisticated and with a wide selection. However, I do wonder how they are storing the wines, as they seemed mostly room temperature when they were served (and this was during July). I wouldn't be surprised if their cellar was simply a large closet. Nevertheless, to even find such a selection in that part of Montana cannot be understated. The bar was also a source of great enjoyment, with friendly bartenders who really made me feel like I was at my neighborhood bar. The service throughout my stay was always responsive, polite, and friendly. I really can't wait for my next visit to this hotel befitting its name, Grand.

As a native of BT who has since moved away, It is always a treat to come back to The Grand. This is THE place in town for great food and wine. The "Saloon"- Bar side on the Left- Really fantastic burgers, great beer selection, and a daily lunch special. I love their gourmet grilled cheese, a fantastic mushroom swiss, and fresh salads served with the amazing fennel-seed laden breadsticks. This is a local lunch favorite, and rightfully so. The "Dining Room"- While upstairs is a hotel, the star of the Grand is the dining room. Chef Amy Smith makes amazing fair with fresh seasonal fish (salmon is spectacular), the famous beef, and some really innovative and fun appetizers, especially the kassari cheese flambe. Her prime rib is unreal. Save room for the dessert cart as well. Also- this restaurant was recognized by the wine spectator for a great cellar. This is a gem! Sunday brunch has prime rib, breakfast fare, and pasta. Check it out for a really fun weekend experience after church. Karen and Larry are really great as well. A+. Overall- Bar for beer and lunch- Around $10 a plate Dining room for amazing wine and the best food in Big Timber. $15-30.

We had road trouble on our way to Bozeman. We wanted to stay at the Grand, but it was booked solid. It turned out nearly everywhere was booked solid from Billings to Bozeman. Even though it was clear we wouldn't be staying at the Grand or spending even a dime there, Chris took it upon himself to call everywhere he could think of to find us a place to sleep. He located a cabin at a campground that required that we bring our own sheets and he loaned us a full set, with a comforter and two towels, no charge. Incredible. I'll be returning, with gratitude and a reservation.

The cultural and culinary epicenter of Sweet Grass County, Montana! Chef Amy is able to turn out the finest upscale bar food and fantastic dinner entrees from a kitchen that is smaller than a postage stamp. The lunch and dinner specials are always brilliant and the fully stocked bar is a welcome treat after a long day on the road or ranch. During the season, anything offered with fresh local morels will be a home run. The staff at The Grand are as good as it gets and always friendly and upbeat even when rushed at dinner, when the place gets slammed during fishing season or rodeo. The Sunday Brunch is one of the best meals you'll ever have and is a true value. RUN DON'T WALK to The Grand Hotel!!

We stayed near the Crazy Mountains for our honeymoon - Big Timber was the closest town. We were looking for a place to go out for dinner and a web search quickly demonstrated the Grand was one of the only places in town. The husband noted the wine list would be a good indicator. Can you say Holy Cow? Opus One in a tiny town in Montana?? Not to mention the wine list is incredibly huge. Anyway, we stopped by on our way in and sat at the bar. A couple of Moose Drool's and an order of lobster corn cakes plus onion rings made us very happy. The lobster crab cakes were extremely good and had a yummy relish on the side. The onion rings were near perfection. We came back a couple of days later for dinner. We ordered bacon wrapped scallops as an app - YUM! Our only complaint was that there were only three on the plate. In addition, our very cute (and young) server quietly asked us "what are scallops?", we were happy to explain. The husband had Herb Roasted Rack of Montana Lamb and I had the Gorgonzola Tenderloin. Both were outstanding as well as the salad that came with our dish. The chef also came out to greet us, which was nice. Overall, we thought this was an amazing find in such a small town. The server's were friendly, the atmosphere was fun and the food was delish!

My favorite meal is a handful of bread sticks (Chico style), the French Onion Trio and bacon wrapped scallops. Not to mention the Mojitos... great place to catch Michael Keaton at the bar and people watch besides. Rooms are large and 1920-30's Art Deco-ish. Also, it's a great place to catch a Sunday Brunch if you are in or around Livingston, because it doesn't get the traffic that Chico does.

What a surprise! Great gourmet food in a tiny town! This is a wonderful restaurant in a historic old hotel. I had a terrific marlin dish, spinach salad, and the wine cellar is even good. We also stayed at the hotel - which is a much more rustic and basic experience - kind of like staying a hotel in the 1890's. Shared bathrooms and very basic rooms - but still a fun experience. They even have a haunted room. Ask for room 11.

The Grand, in my estimation, is the last, best hotel. It is a splendidly operated, true to its character, original Western hotel. There are comfortable rooms that are well appointed, again in character, with none of that ridiculous air of 1890's boudoirs and all the foo-foo that some places favor. There is an attached bar, well-stocked and handsome with original wood and some impressive game mounts including a large bull moose head that sets a great tone. The bar seems to be a popular spot with a variety of town and country folks though visitors aren't left feeling out of place at all. The restaurant is one of the best I've found, especially in the quality across a broad ranging menu. Chef Amy has been there 25 years and is a local treasure. The only thing I can think of she lacks is a published cook book. Oh, a breakfast of hers is included in the cost of your room. Chris, the new owner after four years with the Grand, is a fine young man; friendly, smart and intent on pleasing his guests. We recently had a birthday party that extended over three days at the hotel for 17 guests. The stay was marked by perfect execution from the staff and management. From check-in to check-out, nothing was amiss and, with a lot going on in the way of side events, Chris ensured that his staff remained completely flexible in changes here and there to keep us on track and always comfortable. He is as good an example I've seen of entrepreneurship in Montana and overall an excellent hotelier. Chris has the knack of surrounding himself with bright, friendly staff. If he's not in the hotel the very moment you need something, there'll be someone on duty able to see things through. Back to Chef Amy; the main dinner party during our three days included several off-menu items we wanted, ranging from Rocky Mountain Oysters for one of the appetizers to fresh-baked Huckleberry pie a la mode for dessert. Every item served was delicious. Special attention was paid to our one vegetarian guest. The efforts by Chris and Chef Amy, not to mention the lovely head waitress Bobby, ensured that the young lady was as well fed as those who dined on racks of lamb and beef filets. Throughout we were all treated as valued guests not just paying customers. Big Timber has a lot going on. The Boulder River Canyon immediately south is one of the prettiest spots in Montana and was the location for filming both The Horse Whisperer and the fishing sequences in A River Runs Through It. Access to the Yellowstone River is close at hand for rafting or fishing as well. Overall, the town has a vitality and unspoiled charm that I find unmatched and the Grand Hotel is central to all that.

If you are in the area, whisk your SUV off the well-worn track of interstate 90 and onto the cowboy boot-scuffed sidewalks of Big Timber for an evening of beefy goodness at the Grand Hotel. You never expect to get food this good in such a small town. Being spoiled and living in the foodielandia known as Portland, I've had my fair share of incredible food experiences. So I was surprised to find a burger this good lurking in the backroom of a funky old historic hotel in Big Timber. Main street was dead as we made our way into the rickety brick building on a blustery Wednesday evening. The bar was full, so we went in the main dining room in the back. A sweet veteran server dropped off the *fancy menus* for the main dining room. We eyed the $30 plates of seafood and $45 slabs of meat for a few minutes. Nothing tickled our collective fancy. We decided we must examine see the less expensive *bar menus*. Everything seemed to be $30 and either be seafood or steak. And I know better than to order seafood in Montana. So we asked to see the bar menu. That was a good choice. I can't speak to the main menu but we all ordered burgers and they came out amazing. The Grand offered way too good of a beer menu for a place that size. I had the Czech Mate Pilsner from Red Lodge Ales, one of my favorite breweries in Montana. It was light, crisp and paired extremely well with my Cowboy Hall of Fame Burger. One of the best burgers I've had in a long time. I was said when I finished it because I didn't the burger to end. Ever. The Cowboy Hall of Fame burger. Remember that name. It had this coffee rub on it that delicately infused every morsel of the beef with this earthy and robust flavor that is hard to put into words. It wasn't overly greasy like some burgers I've had. It came adorned with a delightful house sauce, melted Swiss, onions, and tomato nestled between a soft, tasty bun. Judging from some of the other reviews, the main * fancy menu* is not all it's cracked up to be. But please do yourself a gigantic favor and try a burger and a beer here. .

This place is delicious! And the most happy dining experience I've had in Big Timber. All of the food is scrumptious and absolutely lovely in presentation. The service is a delight. The old 1890 establishment is quaint and quirky. I'm swooning. And they have wine varieties that don't come in a box and...Actually taste good! Ahhhh. I came here last night for the organic chicken over artichoke hearts. Tonight is a glass of Cabernet with the pork osso bucco over mashed potatoes. YUM.

So, it's been over a year, and we thought we'd give the Grand Hotel & Restaurant another shot.So many people around here love it -- I should, too, right? This time we ate in the bar, which was a great choice. It was about 8:00 p.m. As soon as we sat down, we were so happy that we chose the bar - it feels a little bit less "1980's" in there, and the mood is much more fun and lively. And then we waited. And waited. A very sweet hostess - two, actually, came and served us water and checked in on us as we continued to wait for our server. Finally, our waitress came and asked if we wanted anything to drink. "Do you recommend the Cab or the Malbec?" My "usual" question. She had no recommendations, because she was under 21. So, I went with the Writer's Block Malbec, which was fine. She brought us our wine and bread and bread sticks. The bread was chewy (not at all fresh tasting), and the bread sticks were hard and had an actual flavor of old, stale crackers. We'll pass, thanks. We're not supposed to eat gluten or butter, so I guess they were doing us a favor. We ordered the bacon-wrapped scallop appetizer and the grilled flank steak entree. The scallops were served, and I immediately became concerned when I could smell a strong, fishy odor. Then I silently scolded myself for being such a food snob, and dug in. The scallops tasted good, and some of the bacon was good. Yay! I might get to like the grand!! There was a couple of layers of bacon in some sections, so the double-layered areas had flabby, unrendered bacon that I just took out; without the yucky bacon, the scallops and yummy bacon tasted pretty good. However, they were served on top of chopped, cold, completely unseasoned, cooked cabbage (which was weird), and what was advertised as a "maple bourbon sauce," which really just tasted like super sweet maple syrup. TIP: If I ever come back, I would order this again, but mix the maple "sauce" with the cabbage before I eat it; it actually makes more sense and warms up the cold, bland cabbage. Our green salad came next. We asked for the spinach salad with the garlic vinegarette. It was good; TIP: I'm guessing that the garlic is raw and blended with the dressing. There is a lot of dressing and a lot of raw garlic -- not a good choice if you are on a first date (or want to taste much of anything else later). My husband and I love garlic, so we were into it. The nuts in the salad tasted good, too. I just wish that when we eat at a "nice" (or expensive) restaurant, the spinach isn't huge, whole leaves. But, the flavors were there. The flank steak was $24.99. At a place like this that everyone seems to love, and is called "The Grand," and that charges $24.99 for the entree, one has a certain expectation of at least mediocre. This entree (and the terrible service) was why I give this dinner only one star. The $24.99 plate came out with .... a steak and mashed potatoes ... that's it. Oh wait, and and the famous sprig of rosemary (see my last review). So, ok, let's get to eating. No choice was given at the time of ordering as to what type of potatoes we would like, but I love mashed potatoes, so that was good. The flank steak had *ZERO* flavor (ok, my palate may have been a bit compromised from the garlic dressing, but hey, it had no flavor). My steak was cooked nicely, my husband's was pretty raw, so, in our book, that leaves neither a positive nor negative mark, at least when we eat in Montana. But oh, the mashed potatoes. They didn't seem to taste like anything - not even like butter or salt. What was worse was that there were huge chunks of brown, hard/chewy pieces of a mystery something all throughout it. The potatoes had absolutely no flavor, so it didn't seem like it could be cheese, although the texture and color suggested maybe cheese. I thought - if this is cheese, I'm definitely not eating it; we don't generally eat dairy, and this bland, gross dish of what is supposed to be mashed potatoes, is certainly not worth a dairy stomach ache. So, I asked. It was the burnt crap on the bottom of what must have been a big ol' pan of mashed potatoes. So gross. The server and cook HAD to have seen it - it was throughout that serving!! They brought us green beens to replace the potatoes. Full price + $3.00 split charge, and not much nice service to soften the blow. We went home utterly grossed out and excited to pay less than half the price next time at a local grill for MUCH better steak and potatoes and much better service -- and decor -- and atmosphere. Shame on the Grand.

Living in Big Timber has its advantages. One of those is working next door to The Grand. Our office pretty much eats lunch there daily and our family has dinner there at least once a week for the past 18 years. The daily lunch specials are outstanding. The dinner menu offers a wide variety of choices that are delicious!

I'm shocked there are any negative reviews of this amazing restaurant! My inlaws brought us here last night and the whole experience was wonderful. First, the gal who complained about the atmosphere being "too 1890's" must not appreciate history because that is the whole beauty of this restaurant! The dining room and bar give off the romantic old west vibe with painted copper tiles on the walls and beautiful wood dining tables. Our host was wonderfully attentive throughout the whole meal, bringing our kids coloring books and even flowers! So sweet! Our server was very pleasant and never left us waiting. We started with the Dark Horse Cabernet which was fantastic. My husband had their signature beer - Trout Lips Ale which was also very good. We tried their other beer, the latte stout and it, too, was great. Better than the Ale in my opinion but I love dark beer. We left with a growler of each. We ordered the shrimp cocktail which came with 4 giant prawns and they did not disappoint! We also got the onion rings and they were very good - not greasy at all and were more shoestring than giant rings. The server also told us how to reheat them in the oven when we got them home (it was a huge plate). I ordered the clam chowder which had plenty of clam and wasn't too salty. It was very good. I also had the New York steak done rare. They cooked it perfectly! I hate when I order rare and it comes out anything but. I added the sautéed mushrooms and wish I could have had more. So good! Not sure what the chef sautéed them in but maybe a wine? The potatoes were mashed and had good flavor. My father in law had the walleye, mother in law the duck and both said their meals were fantastic. The big treat was the dessert!!! It was a banana cake with bananas fosters! My husband said it was literally the best he's ever had. It really was amazing. I liked how thick the cake was! My only minor complaint was that I waited a bit to get someone to fill my growler at the bar but, boo hoo!! I was in a beautiful, historic building. I wasn't in a hurry to get back to the bustle of today...I enjoyed the feeling that bar gave me. The only thing missing were the spittoons ;) Loved every minute and would recommend this restaurant highly!

My wife and I needed to escape the pressures of work and family so we made the 65 mile drive to Big Timber. We were greeted immediately upon our arrival. We checked into a beautiful room right out of the twenties and then made our way to the dining room. The service was impeccable. I was greeted by last name every time I was addressed. My wife ordered the filet and I ordered the chef's grouper special. While waiting for dinner we had an incredible flavor filled spinach salad accented with sweet pecans, strawberries and Bleu cheese. The grouper was out of the world with it's pineapple salsa. My wife's filet was just ok. Part way thru our meal we swapped entrees. She dislikes fish but loved the spot on grouper. A chocolate covered cheesecake proved enough for two. Homemade and another home run. Back to the room for some relaxation and solitude. The antique furnishings are beautiful. We loved the room composed of a bedroom, sitting room and bathroom. The only complaint is that the bed was subpar. The antique headboard should stay but the bed must go. The shower was great followed by a great breakfast. We will be back...just hoping for a new bed. Thanks to the owners and staff for s gun and relaxing escape.
